Crafting Subtle Romance: 3D Printed Valentine’s Gifts with CHCKX PLA Crystal

My partner doesn’t really care about 3D printing. She likes the things I make, but the whole “bed leveling” thing? Not interested. But last Valentine’s Day, I printed a small flower using CHCKX PLA Crystal — clear, with just a hint of rose tint — and put a tiny LED tealight inside it. She kept it on her bedside table for months.

Why PLA Crystal for Valentine’s Day?

PLA Crystal is translucent. Hold a printed piece up to the light and you can see through it, with a soft, frosted glow that catches light in a way opaque filament can’t.

Project 1: The Crystal Rose Lantern

A hollow rose, ~80mm tall, petals thin enough that light passes through. Printed in Crystal Rose.

Settings: 0.16mm layer, 2 walls, 10% gyroid infill, 215°C nozzle.

Project 2: The Interlocking Heart Box

Two halves that thread together, no hardware, no glue. Printed in Crystal Clear, you can see the mechanism working inside.

Project 3: The Geometric Vase

Rhombic dodecahedron vase, printed in Crystal Amber. Warm honey color in sunlight.

Project 4: The Nameplate Night Light

Working With PLA Crystal: What’s Different

  1. Stringing more visible — dial in retraction
  2. Layer lines show more — print at 0.16mm
  3. Moisture matters more — dry at 45–50°C if cloudy

Lighting: The Secret Ingredient

Warm white LED (2700–3000K) brings out depth. Avoid cool white.
